Served as surrogate for the Secretary for several speaking engagements.  Represented the regional office on policy initiatives of the department, including organizing events to address mental health issues for military families and to promote use of health care IT optimizing health outcomes for individuals and communities. Coordinated efforts of the regional office in disaster response and recovery for the tornado in Joplin, MO that included development of a child mental health task force, provider resource seminar, and coordinating CMS response to ensure continuity of provider reimbursement. Organized a Health Data Summit in St Louis linking HIT innovators and users to DHHS initiatives. Lead sponsor of legislation on state-sponsored health care reform, children’s health care reform, telehealth, electronic health records, physical education, school improvement funding, energy policy reform, health care professions workforce planning, and online driver’s education. Named an “Emerging Health Care Leader” – National Council of State Legislatures in 2005. Served on Health IT Champions (HITCH) committee, Transportation and Health Policy committees - National Council of State Legislators.
