About Judith Bautista, Ph.D.
Experienced in materials science and analytical chemistry with a passion for innovation. I support the packaging and specialty plastics (P&SP) separation and characterization group at Dow Chemical. My postdoc appointment in the Collinson group involved the preparation and characterization of stationary phase gradients on packed columns for HPLC applications. In my Ph.D. studies in the Higgins group at Kansas State University, I creatively re-designed an inkjet printer to print organosilane chemical gradients on paper for chromatography applications where a lot of the focus was on formulating a proper sol "ink". I also developed and implemented a vapor plotting method using a commercial x-y-z stage to plot chemical patterns and gradients on silicon wafer and silica glass for various applications including optical and microelectronic devices. Other projects I worked on included the synthesis and use of inorganic heterogeneous catalysts (Mg-Zr-Cs/SiO2, MgO) and thin films to understand their localized chemical activity employing optical probes. Additionally, I have experience with single molecule imaging (widefield fluorescence microscopy) and tracking methods to follow chemical processes occurring at nanoscales. In addition to my technical skills, I enjoy serving in leadership roles. I co-served 5 years as a member of Kansas State University Graduate Student Council and Honor Council. As a graduate student ambassador, I responded to emails and gave campus tours to prospective graduate students. As a student member of the Honor Council, I served in case review boards and hearing panels that are designed to uphold academic integrity and ensure a fair process for students to contest an alleged violation report.

Graduate Research Assistant
- Research Assistant (Prof. Daniel Higgins's Lab):
- Developed and implemented a vapor phase plotting method using a x-y-z stage to plot chemical pads and gradients (from C8 or cyano silanes) on SiO2 films. Method has the potential to pattern films for optical and.
- Optimized C8 silica sol “ink” to print chemical gradients on paper using an inkjet printer for chromatography applications
- Employed sol-gel chemistry to make inorganic heterogeneous catalysts (Mg-Zr-Cs/SiO2, MgO) and thin films to study their material properties at macro and nanoscales for aldol catalysis
- Characterized materials with various analytical techniques (XPS, XRD, TPD, SEM, TEM, and fluorescence microscopy)
- Employed ensemble spectroscopic and single molecule imaging and tracking methods to study chemical processes of catalyst-substrate interfaces
Graduate Teaching Assistant
- Lab Instructor: Chemistry I & II (~100 students/semester), Chemical Analysis (18 students)
- Set up lab equipment, prepared reagents and standardized solutions prior to lab
- Supervised and guided students’ experiments (titrations, analyte quantification by GC-FID, spectrophotometry and AA techniques)
Product Development Intern
- Worked closely with the research scientist to prepare raw products for sampling by blending surfactants or setting up reactions
- Ran quality control tests to validate synthesized products employing wet chemistry (activity analysis via autotitrator, moisture analysis via Karl Fisher, pH measurements, & FTIR)
- Drafted technical reports of analysis for the Research & Development team
Undergraduate Researcher
- Evaluated and validated EPA SOP 218.7 for the determination of Cr (VI) in water (LOD 0.200 ppb) using HPLC instrumentation with post-column derivatization
- Received direct hands on experience troubleshooting the HPLC over the course of 2 years
- Collaborated with the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC), Dr. Megan Hart, in gathering preliminary data on Cr (VI) remediation of run-off water using the optimized SOP
- Presented research at the National ACS Agricultural and Food Chemistry Division Undergraduate Student Research Symposium
