Occupational and Environmental Pathology Program at SUNY Upstate Medical University. Research projects are focused on occupational and environmental exposures from chemical, physical and biological agents and respiratory health outcomes. Subject areas include indoor environmental quality (PM2.5, PM10, VOCs, Fungi, NO2, CO2, allergens, endotoxin), asbestos exposure, accelerated silicosis, coal mining, metalworking fluids, composite solid surfaces and others. Consulting services include study design and implementation, biostatistical analysis, data management, quality control, and manuscript preparation.

Taught undergraduate and graduate student sections of a new academic course covering fundamentals of occupational health and safety. Developed course materials covering topics including safety legislation, occupational disease, industrial hygiene, injury epidemiology, workers compensation, accident causation theory, hazardous materials, ergonomics, fire protection and prevention, OSHA written programs, workplace violence and others.

This research project quantifies background exposure levels and potential health impacts, including cancer risk, of PM2.5 and PAHs in local and regional sources and examines differences in the biological activity of PM2.5 and PAHs from urban and rural sites. Role: Co-investigator and Postdoctoral Associate. Provided field team training, direction, and quality control for collection of ambient air samples for PM2.5/PAH. Performed human health risk assessment estimating cancer risk from measured PAH (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) concentrations and comparing these results from estimates modeled by EPA’s National Air Toxics Assessment program.

Provide leadership and direction for a comprehensive environmental health program involving industrial hygiene, laboratory safety, health and safety training, asbestos abatement and radiation safety. Provide specific technical supervision for programs including campus wide asbestos survey, indoor air quality studies, hazard communication, chemical hygiene, noise, respiratory protection, heat stress, semiconductor research, hazardous waste site monitoring, remediation and community relations, confined space entry, review of research involving hazardous substances, industrial hygiene surveillance programs, food sanitation, and others.
