I am profoundly deaf, self-employed qualified tutor. I have worked in education for over 40 years of experience teaching both young people and adults. I have City & Guilds 7407 Stage 1 & 2 qualifications as well as a 730 certificate, QTLS, and have enhanced level DBS clearance.In the past I have held responsibilities at team leader level, and I have taught a wide range of subjects. These include teaching basic literacy and numeracy, for about 8 years, to deaf adults, some of whom had additional learning difficulties. I have teaching qualifications for this area. I have also taught British Sign Language at levels 1, 2 and pre-3, and deaf/deaf-blind awareness. Again I have teaching qualifications for these subjects. As a freelance tutor I have taught Deaf Awareness and British Sign language courses at several colleges and schools. In addition I have taught these subjects as evening classes for adults and as part of workplace training. The content of these courses can be adapted to specific needs and budget, and could be quite short introductions (e.g. one hour per week for three weeks) or could extend over a full academic year leading to a formal qualification (British Sign Language Level 1 Certificate). The skills developed in these courses not only help students to appreciate the challenges faced by deaf people, but will equip learners with the basic skills to communicate with deaf people and gain a greater overall understanding about achieving successful communication. Past students have found these courses both engaging and beneficial. In addition sign language is an excellent skill for improving employability, particularly for those students wanting to pursue a career in health services. In addition to working as a freelance sign language tutor I also served for several years as a Trustee of the Deafness Support Network that services the needs of deaf people in the Cheshire area.I have worked with hearing families with deaf children and with nursery staff, teaching them how to communicate with deaf babies and toddlers.
