Doctoral ResearcherThe Johns Hopkins University Aug 2010 - Jul 2015Baltimore, Maryland Areao Investigated mechanisms of learning using behavioral, pharmacological, and histological techniques in a nonhuman animal model.o Discovered a novel behavioral observation in the submerged T-maze, a variant on the Morris water maze.o Uncovered critical first steps in understanding the neural mechanisms underlying this behavioral pattern, which was opposite from that previously reported in the widely-accepted literature.o Mastered survival stereotaxic surgery skills, including cannula implantation and excitotoxic lesions, as well as animal handling, including systemic injections and temporary inactivations without the use of anesthesia.o Developed improved protocols for histological tissue preparation, including intra-cardial perfusions, microtome sectioning, microscopy, Nissl staining, and Fos immunohistochemistry for immediate early gene (IEG) expression.o Advanced learning theory through associative learning conditioning paradigms, including blocking, unblocking, autoshaping, extinction, and contextual pairings.o Served as a conceptual and statistical consultant on a successful interdisciplinary collaboration with a human neuroimaging lab on the association between obesity, high-fat diet, and structural and functional differences in the brain.o Presented scientific results in 3 international conferences, 7 symposia, and 2 federal grant submissions as primary contributor.o Contributed to the scientific literature: 6 peer-reviewed empirical articles, with 4 as first-author publications. -
