A professional water colour/pen & ink illustrator in Montreal, Canada at age 14, Judith Carruthers then went to straight black and white cartooning. Not enjoying the solitary life of a full time artist, Primarily self-taught, Carruthers started out in water colour and ink during the early days and hadn’t picked up a brush in almost 30 years. In 1987 she began to doodle and lo and behold an entire cast of characters was lying in wait. Carruthers had several exhibits of her cartoon work in Canada during the late ‘80’s early ‘90’s including an interview on national radio, through the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation. At this time, the cartoons were strictly black and white. “The ‘toons seemed to have more punch in stark black and white. I guess I lost touch with colour,” commented Carruthers.Teased by friends that she always worked in black in white, with a black and white dog at her side in her black and white furnished town house, Carruthers, purchased the book “Painting Animals on Rocks.” Within weeks of taking up acrylics she was producing and selling portraits of folk’s dogs and cats, in Vermont and on the West Coast of Canada. Carruthers presented an exhibit of her acrylic pet portraits at the Night Owl Gallery in Rutland a couple of years ago. “The pet portraits were selling as fast as I could paint them. Maybe the ‘production’ feel burned me out and I really added only 2 colours – two neutrals really - to my palette – gold and burnt sienna. I wanted even more colour.Judith is switching back to water media/pen & ink with still a touch of the ‘cartoony’ look – and, among other things mean looking rodeo bulls in soft pastels. The series of kids skating on frozen ponds came about right after Judith became an American citizen. She thinks perhaps all of a sudden needing to paint very Canadian scenes was a reaction to having let go the Canadian side of her life.
