Molecular Ecology Lab

Plant Genetics Lab

Identified homozygous mutants of Arabidopsis thaliana, a small flowering plant, from a purchased mutant seed collection using PCR. Confirmed T-DNA insertion of Palmitoyltransferase (PAT) gene was homozygous using PCR and gel electrophoresis. Analyzed sequenced PCR products to determine how T-DNA insertion affected genomic DNA. Determined if full length PAT protein was made from mutants using RT-PCR. Hypothesized how T-DNA insertion affected protein structure and functioning, and how loss-of-protein affected development of plant. Presented research findings at the University's Undergraduate Research Conference and the Northeast Section of the American Society of Plant Biologists.
