I worked as Copy Editor at a non-profit company, the Recycling and Economic Development Initiative of South Africa (REDISA). Through its Integrated Industry Waste Management Plan, REDISA collected waste tyres across the country and operated a supply chain network which stored, transported and processesed the tyres, thereby contributing to the circular economy. This textbook series was written and published for learners of English as a first additional language in the Further Education and Training Phase (Grades 10-12). My co-authors and I wrote the first series within the framework of the Outcomes-Based National Curriculum Statement. Between 2010 and 2012, we revised the series in preparation for the implementation of the new syllabus (Curriculum and Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS)). I taught English at first language level to Grade 9 and 10 pupils, and business subjects (Sales & Marketing and Business Start-Up) to Grade 8 and 9 pupils. Working through teaching agencies, I taught in a variety of schools in London. Assignments were temporary and ranged in length from one day to six weeks. The flexibility of this work allowed me to travel extensively in Europe, in between working. On my return to South Africa I taught in three schools in Johannesburg in a temporary capacity.
