Hi. I went into nursing as a second career after 20 years in the film industry . There I was a business owner, freelancer, technical note writer and editor. After traveling to Ecuador and Laos as an organizer on several surgical mission trips, I decided nursing was for me , especially working with under served communities. I graduated with honors from University of Maryland school of Nursing with my BSN. From there I worked at Kernan hospital in brain and spine rehabilitation. Kernan is a post trauma facility as it serves Shock trauma and I began to fall in love with wounds, if love is the right word! I graduated from the WICKS WOCN program after doing 160 hrs clinical at Hopkins/Bayview in early 2010. One month later I responded to the earth quake in Haiti . I served there for 5 months in 2010 as "wound chief" in the field hospital meeting and working with literally hundreds of wound care practitioners from the US and the world. I served 9 yrs after that building a wound center in Pap at the Bernard Mevs Hospital working with Project Medishare and Dr John Macdonald. (I was working per diem wound care at home during that time at Kernan and NW hospital.) We were successful in building a state of the art wound center with vascular, podiatry and dermatology. Our clinic served thousands of wound /ostomy patients from 2010 (until closing in 2020 due to local violence and political unrest). I served as the nurse educator and assistant director. In 2016 I ran a diabetic foot study there for Rosalind Franklin University , we presented that study at the American Podiatric society conference . During 2017-2019 I educated our nurses as well as students of physical therapy from a nearby PT school . Dr Macdonald and I presented details of our clinic at both the SAWC and WOCN conferences during 2013-2018. I also consulted on a lymphedema program that was installed in a nearby hospital in Leogone Haiti during those years . I miss Haiti very much . I currently do wound and ostomy care at both NW and Sinai. I require continued education and continued academic growth ! My current goal is to learn about the causes and best treatment for wounds created by IV drug users . I hope to explore this much needed area of wound care this year .
