When I was ten years old I wanted to grow up to be a cowboy - like the ones I read about in my dad's Louis L’Amour books, riding in to save the day. Three decades later the closest I’ve come to herding cattle across the Great Plains is riding a camel outside of Dubai. And although I can’t say I’ve ridden into anywhere to save the day, I have parachuted into more than a dozen jobs to become a key team contributor thanks to my love of learning and my desire to make things better. I’ve collected a wide range of work experiences over the years; soldier, writer, teacher, project coordinator, auditor, security officer, editor, lead hand and student. I’ve had such a varied career I jokingly started calling myself an Odd Job Ninja, but there is definitely some truth to the title.I am most productive when I’m engaged in a variety of work. My dream job would include some form of teaching or outreach, writing and design work, a little quiet time for organizing, travel (in-province or around the world), as well as some hands-on projects that would get me away from my computer (especially if it involved building tiny 120 square foot houses). Luckily I’ve had the opportunity to try out all of the above in the many ATCO projects I’ve worked on since 2000.I’m a passionate learner with an eye for detail, however I completely agree with Mahatma Gandhi’s quote “Freedom is not worth having if it does not connote freedom to err.” Mistakes are an important part of getting it right and making it better. If you have any questions whether it’s for an upcoming assignment that could use my help or a softball team that needs a last minute fielder – drop me a line at OddJobNinja@gmail.com. I look forward to connecting.p.s. Below are two newsletters I edited and designed while working in Kandahar Airfield (KAF). People often ask me what it was like working in Afghanistan, so I’m happy to share a little slice of KAF contractor life for your reading pleasure.

Peter Robb with ARTSFILE generously shared a question/answer session we had about my show here: https://artsfile.ca/ottawa-fringe-judy-reid-is-battling-ptsd-with-the-healing-power-of-improv/. And Kenneth Ingram wrote a lovely review of my show for apt613.ca here: https://apt613.ca/fringe-review-how-to-get-over-a-guy-in-723-days-2/. -

Prep CookDildo Dory Grill Jul 2014 - Aug 2014Dildo, Newfoundland And LabradorWorking at the Dildo Dory Grill was a definite highlight of my motorcycle adventure in Newfoundland. In six weeks I became a master potato peeler and french fry chopper, learned to bake a mean batch of tea biscuits and cooked up some super tasty seafood chowders. I was surprised at how physically demanding the job could be and appreciated having the opportunity to work at something completely different over the summer.A big thank you to my supervisor Lori and my co-workers Brenda and Cody for showing me the ropes... and for not giving me a hard time when I ruined my first batch of fishcakes. NOTE: I recommend the fish and chips, fish and brewis, both seafood chowders, moose pot pies and everything else on the menu. Just an hour and a bit from St. John's and open during the summer until Labour Day. C'mon down to the Dildo Dory Grill and get stuffed!

I couldn't have asked for a better teacher of how to elicit a smile from even the most weary worker or warrior or how to frame a shot of a hulking Antonov An-225 cargo aircraft as it bore down on us, bouncing along the busiest single runway in the world while we both crouched down in the back of an ATCO pickup truck, sweating, eating dust, and grinning. In 2019 the Canadian War Museum acquired more than two decades of Garth's work including 400+ hours of footage and 700+ photographs of CF soldiers operating overseas in Bosnia, Croatia, Burma, Kuwait, Somalia, Sri Lanka and Afghanistan, including the entire collection of still images that Garth took in Afghanistan over the course of several missions, and footage he shot in Canada of CF military emergency assistance during the 1998 ice storm.Garth passed away from a long illness on 7 April 2020 at Foothills Country Hospice in Okotoks, Alberta with his wife Sue at his side. "I hope somebody steps into where I was and tells Canadians what their soldiers are doing all over the world. I tried my best." - excerpt from Garth's obituary -
