As a practitioner-scholar, I teach courses on management and leadership, leadership for social transformation, and community-based participatory action research at New York University Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service. I am a feminist pedagogue who motivates my students to think critically about themselves and the world around them. As an interdisciplinary sociologist, I’m inspired by scholars like bell hooks, Gloria Anzaldúa, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, Stuart Hall, C. Wright Mills, and those who open our imaginations to wrestle with questions of power, social and institutional relations, and the pursuit of justice. In addition to my teaching, I’m a research and strategy consultant working with social justice leaders to scale and transform their programs, organizations, and networks. My prior work experience in multiple institutional contexts -- from government and nonprofit to academia -- enables me to orchestrate possibilities to thorny structural dilemmas that get in the way of leaders doing their best work. My clients represent the following areas: the arts/culture, higher education, film/media, grassroots organizations, and philanthropy; they are geographically dispersed, hailing from the Rio Grande Valley in south Texas to a small college town in Massachusetts and points in between, with a majority based in the NYC tri-state area.My teaching and consulting are informed by my study of sociology at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Education, Teachers College, and training by Rockwood Leadership Institute, Emergent Strategy Ideation Institute, and Public Science Project's Critical Participatory Action Research Summer Institute. I routinely draw on women of color feminist scholarship and organizational change management frameworks as works cited and sources of inspiration. I’m known to ground my teaching and consulting projects in justice-centered ways of knowing, being, and doing. As a writer, I’ve contributed essays about feminism and teaching to Intervenxions, the Journal of Public Affairs Education, The New Historia, and Public Seminar. Additionally, I have a book chapter in an edited volume about a participatory data collection method inspired by the Free Southern Theater's story circle practice that will be published by Manchester University Press in 2025.Learn more about me at www.judypryorramirez.com
