Built a sustainability program which promoted culture change across all levels of campus including faculty, students, staff and operations.• In collaboration with the facilities department, we reduced energy use and the associated greenhouse gas emissions by 45% through conservation and careful management.• Through a planning process, we developed, promoted and implemented a campus-wide sustainable building policy and sustainable landscape master plan and developed, vetted and adopted a bottled water policy campus-wide. • As part of the design and construction team for new campus housing, we achieved a LEED for Homes© rating for the college’s Centennial Commons townhome complex (led the LEED process).• In collaboration with culinary services, we reduced the amount of food waste 30% by eliminating the use of trays in the cafeteria. • I developed internship and employment opportunities for students in the office.• I directed a semester-long study abroad program in Quetzaltenango, Guatemala and co-directed a short-term study abroad program in Otavalo, Ecuador.

Quetzaltenango, Guatemala

This program focuses on language acquisition, cultural competency and experiential learning. Students study at Celas Maya, a Spanish language school (www.celasmaya.edu.gt/), live with host families, participate in a study abroad seminar, and engage in service learning. As director, I was responsible for the health and well being of 19 students for the semester. I worked closely with the staff of Celas Maya to ensure student success and developed and taught the seminar course entitled, The Culture of Consumption: A comparison of the US and Guatemala. We worked with the pueblo of Paxtoca to build bridges and understanding between our group and the youth there.

Otavalo, Ecuador

Team directed the short term study abroad program for college students. The program combined academic instruction with sustainability-related service learning opportunities in a remote village. Projects included renovation of a day care center, gardens, teaching English, math, sports, and health to the children, and overseeing the fair trade embroidery cooperative with the women of Yambiro.

I worked as part of a team hired by multiple industries (healthcare, transportation, commercial/industrial, utilities, government and higher education institutions) to calculate greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). Using GHG as a metric to track success, we facilitated the development and implementation of sustainability plans to reduce emissions, streamline operations and reduce costs. Each project required bringing leaders and staff to consensus on initiatives, and to educate and promote buy-in for sustainability implementation. Client list available upon request.

I was responsible for ensuring compliance with state, county and local permits for 10 solid waste management facilities (yard trimming and food waste compost sites and waste transfer stations). This included permit applications, being the liaison with state and local agencies, engineers, and communities as well as annual reporting.
