After earning a degree and launching my working life at the St. Paul Pioneer Press/Dispatch in Minnesota (and winning a press club award for investigative reporting the first year), I followed an inner compass that pointed north. I moved to Anchorage, Alaska, via federal employment but soon returned to newspaper work and freelance writing in Anchorage.When a family move took me to Juneau I worked in public information with the State of Alaska, then launched Alaska Up Close, a tour business where I wrote travel brochures, informational booklets, ads and news releases as well as a monologue for sightseeing and nature tours. I also began designing web sites for myself and for other small businesses.Since retiring from my tour business I’ve written a play set in one of Alaska’s most compelling and mystical locales, written a book about my experiences as a tour operator and developed a travel guide for the independent traveler to Alaska.I’ve written speeches, newsletters, columns and articles for both the public and private sector and for non-profit organizations.I believe that words matter, that they are the most important medium of exchange in our personal, professional and public lives.
