• Designed and studied RCCI (gasoline/diesel) experimental testing. Studied diesel/gasoline dual-fuel combustion, using energy balance, design of experiment (DOE) and statistical techniques to improve efficiency, and NOx and PM emissions.• Studied the effects of fuel properties and operating conditions (low heat rejection) on combustion and emissions by testing FACE fuel with changing cetane number, aromatic content and distillation temperature on two differently-sized diesel engines (John Deere 4.5L/ GM 1.9L). • Built and troubleshoot different engine test benches with group members. Relevant experience obtained: ETAS-INCA and LabVIEW Real-time system development, electrical instrumentation selection, vibration and proximity data sampling and analysis.• Built 1-D models of RCCI and LTC-LHR engines for FACE fuels by using GT-Power. Investigated relationship between fuel properties and GT-Power parameters for in-depth research of fuel’s property effect on combustion• Debugging the Bosch common rail injection system, Horiba MEXA 7100D Emissions Bench, AVL 415S smoke meter and mini-diluter• Periodic update and teamwork experience with experts from Shell Global Solutions.• Established 1-D model of a large-bore, spark-ignited natural gas engine by using GT-Power. Studied the effects of operating conditions on combustion and engine behavior.

Designed and built a simulation platform combining 1-D and 3-D modeling based on AVL-Fire and AVL-Boost for a six cylinders diesel engine and provided a guarantee to apply control algorithm in it for further study. Built GDI engine model by using AVL-Fire, studied GDI first cycle spray and firing behaviors in accordance with staring characteristics of different engine crankshaft positions.Participated in diesel engine bench test, tested a novel catalytic DPF on a 6-cylinder heavy duty diesel engine. Experience obtained: engine lab test instrumentation, diesel engine emissions measurement devices.Learned gasoline engine and diesel engine work principle, diesel engine electronic control, and modern diesel engine combustion control strategy, diesel engine exhaust after-treatment system (SCR, DPF and DOC).Built diesel engine’s one-dimensional model with Matlab and enDYNA, accomplished the control algorithm of EGR valve and air throttle
