After three years of management training with Henry Tayler & Ries in Durban, Julian studied at UND majoring in English and French, with property development and period house restoration as sidelines. He then did a two year stint with The Daily News and The Natal Mercury, Durban, as a financial and property journalist and photographer before entering the teaching profession. He taught at Glenwood for two years before joining the English Department of Maritzburg College, where he was for seven years involved with drama, student writing and journalism and various sporting activities before moving on to Michaelhouse, where he stayed for eight years until 1991. Going to England to look after an aged parent, he returned to SA to become involved with voluntary, charitable and mission work. He then taught at Weston Agricultural College outside Mooi River and part time at Clifton Prep before moving to the North Western suburbs of Johannesburg to get involved with documentary scripting and conceptualisation. Now semi retired, he is involved in part time teaching and his local MOTHs in Muldersdrift.
