I was responsible for the teams that attract and retain foreign direct investment; bid for and support major corporate, cultural and sporting events; drive capital into regeneration projects; and help London-based companies to expand internationally, including through our two accelerators (Mayor's International Business Programme for scale-ups; Business Growth Programme for start-ups) and programmes such as Silicon Valley Comes to the UK. Our teams focused particularly on areas of strength and future strength for the London economy, including life sciences, financial and business services, edtech, urban technologies (including proptech, mobility, greentech), creative industries and cross-cutting technologies.

As part of the leadership team, I was proud to help build Hawthorn from start-up to a well established financial and corporate communication company. Our clients included multinational companies, as well as start-ups and scale-ups. We supported executive teams through fundraising, deals and times of significant risk.

This role involved i) strengthening our UK relations with some of the world's fastest growing economies and political powers; and ii) working with the UK Prime Minister's Office to drive, expand and manage the award-winning GREAT Britain Campaign. GREAT promotes the UK as a world-class destination for trade, tourism and study in 250 cities across the world.

As UK Ambassador, I represented UK interests with national and regional stakeholders in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. The Embassy and its many allies worked hard to support British companies in the region, advising on opportunities, resolving complex issues and marketing British excellence. I ensured that delicate consular cases were handled kindly in one of the world’s most violent regions. And I worked with young Guatemalans to promote a generational change in attitudes around domestic violence, including via a human chain of 12,000 people from the top to the bottom of a volcano. My role was to work across three Government departments (the Foreign Office, Ministry of Defence and DFID) to coordinate the UK’s conflict work in Sudan, Somalia, Ethiopia and Eritrea. I managed a budget of £13.5m. During this time, I was also the UK's representative to the African Union Peace and Security Department, helping to develop the African Standby Force among other projects.

I led the London team supporting multilateral negotiations in NATO on a range of security and political-military issues.

I was the UK's only secondee at the time to the US Department of State, Washington DC, working in the US Iraq team that advised the then Secretary of State Colin Powell.

I worked with Iraqi women’s groups, helping a number of leaders to join the political process after the fall of Saddam Hussein’s regime. My role also entailed being the political link between Baghdad and eight multinational Coalition governance teams located in Iraq’s Southern and Central provinces, through which I designed and started up an $18m local governance fund to empower locally elected Councils.
