Stuff (or Puna in te reo Māori) is the flagship website of Stuff Limited, New Zealand’s leading media company. Stuff Ltd owns dozens of newspaper and magazine titles including the Sunday Star-Times, the Press and the Dominion Post.I am responsible for the implementation of annual salary reviews for 10,000 staff, as well as providing job evaluation advice, advice and analysis for key HR metrics and advice to execute pay equity strategy. I also provide training for senior executives for remuneration and pay equity.Over the last year, I have implemented the annual salary review and incentive payments and assisted the organisation in deepening their understanding of gender and ethnic pay gaps.

Auckland Council is the largest council in Oceania, with a $3b annual budget, $29b of ratepayer equity, and approximately 8,000 full-time staff.I was responsible for implementing annual salary review for 10,000 staff, providing job evaluation advice and providing advice and analysis for key HR metrics.I was hired after the Auckland Council amalgamation to determine salary bands within the new entity. This resulted in thousands of queries which I needed to log, classify and analyse whilst smoothing over union relationships. My work improved trust between the Union and workforce and resolved many complex issues.After the amalgamation, there were c. 900 individuals who elected to remain on legacy terms and conditions of employment. I developed a process to map out all these terms and conditions, in order to enable the organisation to consider a buy-out of the legacy conditions. As a result, the 900 individuals reduced to 100 after the first round. Over my time at Auckland Council, my deep knowledge and values-driven working style meant that I became a trusted advisor for the PSA union. This enabled me to represent Council in any ambiguous or contentious negotiations and complete each process with an outcome which was acceptable to all parties and fostered a high level of trust. Another highlight was running a multi-faceted remuneration review for Auckland Council and three Council Controlled Organisation (CCOs). Each organisation had a different remuneration review approach, so this was akin to working with four different companies simultaneously. After beginning with a team of 15, I improved efficiency and accuracy to the point that by the end, I was running it almost single-handedly.Finally, I established the gender pay gap reporting, becoming the organisation’s gender pay expert. Subsequently, Auckland Council was recognised as a finalist in the YWCA Equal Pay awards over multiple years, including winning a category which I wrote the submission for.

BP has been in the renewable energy business for more than 20 years and remains one of the largest operators among its peers. It has an established and growing Alternative Energy business, with a significant portfolio across five businesses – biofuels, biopower, wind energy, solar energy, renewable products (Butamax bio-isobutanol).I implemented and project-managed annual salary reviews globally, including budget modelling, salary increase modelling and approval. I coordinated the performance management cycle, including calibrating and facilitating senior management approval, and analysed HR data to identify trends and demographics. I also created job banding for new roles and promotions and conducted HR due diligence for merger and acquisition projects, as well as sourcing market data for an emerging renewable energy market.
