About Julia Drost
I serve as Senior Officer for Trustee Engagement at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, managing the Foundation’s newly established Board of Trustees. I previously served as Chief of Staff at Population Services International (PSI) from 2018-2022 and was CoS at the International Center for Research on Women (ICRW) from 2015-2018. In these roles, I managed the Office of the President, drove internal communications and external visibility opportunities for the CEO, provided strategic support to the full Executive Team, managed the Board of Directors and led special projects. Notably at PSI, this included leading on the organization’s climate accountability commitments. In addition to internal and external communications, policy, strategy, external affairs, stakeholder engagement and management experience, I am a gender, identity & discrimination professional with prior experience both in civil society and in the US Congress with policy, advocacy, political strategy, organizational representation and coalition management. Prior to joining ICRW in 2015, I served as an Advisor and Policy Advocate to Amnesty International USA’s Women’s Human Rights Program, where I managed programmatic initiatives and led the design, coordination, and implementation of Amnesty’s women’s rights policy, advocacy and coalition strategies, primarily to Congress and the US government. Before my time at Amnesty, I worked on Capitol Hill serving my home state Congressman Peter Welch as Scheduling Director and Legislative Aide. My primary legislative issues were violence against women, reproductive rights and maternal health, and related appropriations. As Rep. Welch’s Scheduling Director, I strategized on the Congressman’s policy priorities, maintained relationships with diverse stakeholders, and oversaw his engagements.I earned a Master of Science degree in Gender, Policy & Inequalities from the Gender Institute at the London School of Economics and hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in political science and in English from the University of Vermont, where I graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa.
