Biologist on the Genomics and Diagnostics Team in the Influenza Division

Contractor for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, working on the Genomics and Diagnostics Team in the Influenza Division. In this position I: - Perform routine high-complexity testing of influenza samples using NGS- Produce and analyze next generation sequence data from routine and enhanced global surveillance using multiple approaches related to influenza epidemics or pandemics.- Participate in studies on the evolution of influenza viruses to detect and assess the risk of new emerging variants to current vaccines using genomic laboratory and computation skills- Assist with mathematical and computational approaches to understand, and eventually predict the evolutionary and epidemiological patterns of influenza viruses.- Ensure the appropriate laboratory genomic analysis methods, procedures, techniques, and applicable quality controls are correctly conducted by referring to standard operating procedures (SOPs)

PhD Candidate working in Dr. Travis Glenn's lab, focusing on the genomics of tick vector Ixodes scapularis• Implement Next Generation Sequencing wet and dry laboratory techniques to address hypotheses focusing on the genomics of disease vectors and pathogens• Analyze large sets of Illumina genomic data including reduce representation (RADseq), whole genome, low coverage resequencing, and PacBio 16S data• Clean, filter, and analyze sequencing data utilizing bash shell scripting and established bioinformatic pipelines on a high-performance computing cluster• Evaluate and visualize output data using R and Rstudio• Design PCR protocols from sequences identified from Illumina RADseq and resequencing data• Mange project organization and progress while keeping detailed records of all samples, experiments, and data generated • Write experimental plans, manuscripts, and grants associated with current research projects• Train high school, undergraduate, and graduate researchers in morphological identification of invertebrates, DNA extraction, PCR, library preparation, and data analysis in R
