Julia Freeman-Woolpert retired in 2018 from her position as the Outreach Advocacy Director at the New Hampshire Disability Rights Center (DRC). She spent her 40-year career advocating for the rights of people with disabilities, including frequent writing and presenting on disability and disability rights issues. She has worked as a mentor and advocate for refugees for the past fifteen years, and with Deaf refugees since 2011. For fourteen years, she wrote regular articles for The RAP Sheet, “the latest in disability research, advocacy, policy, and practice,” a publication of three NH Disability organizations. Her opinion pieces have been published in the Concord Monitor, the Nashua Telegraph, the Union Leader, Headway (the newsletter of the Brain Injury Association of New Hampshire) among others. She has traveled throughout Nepal and India and spent a week in 2010 visiting the refugee camps in Nepal. Julia is a former advisor to the Bhutanese Community of New Hampshire, served on the World Deaf Refugee Day planning committee, and served from 2016-2018 on the NH Commission on Deafness and Hearing Loss. In 2018, she received an award from the Deaf Bhutanese Community for “Excellence in Supporting the Deaf Community.” Julia studied under author Sue Hertz at the University of New Hampshire (UNH) Master of Fine Arts program. She is currently authoring a book with Bhawani Dangal, Down the Braided River: My Journey as a Deaf Refugee. She is a Master Gardener and serves on the Board of Sycamore Community Gardens.
