Banting Research Fellow
CurrentResearch Project Title: History of the Book and Literary Memory among Francophone African Diaspora Writers (1999-2021)Research Supervisor: Anthony Glinoer Abstract: Despite the development of book history and sociology of literature, literary studies still pay little attention to the representation of the book in fiction. This lack of interest is particularly notable in the Francophone literatures of Sub-Saharan Africa and their diasporas, where questions of writing and printing are neglected. Yet, many writers from the continent depict the book in their novels, and this trend has only increased over the years. The prevalence of fictional books prompts us to study the interest they generate through a literary and computational analysis of their production, manufacturing, circulation, and legitimation conditions in fiction. The aim is to demonstrate how fictional books account for the configuration of a distinct transnational literary field with its cultural and institutional actors and rules, values, and hierarchies, contributing to a reassessment of notions of literary space and history on a national, continental, and global scale. Situated at the intersection of the sociology of literature, book history, and publishing, this project constitutes the first comparative study on the representation of the book in Francophone literatures of Sub-Saharan Africa and their diasporas.Funding: Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship, Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada*The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program provides funding to the very best postdoctoral applicants, both nationally and internationally.**Ranked as the top candidate out of 155 applications reviewed, with 23 candidates selected.
