About Julia Lewandowski
Hi! I'm Julia, a software developer and data scientist passionate about machine learning. As a Master of Science in Computer Science student at Columbia University, I'm specializing in AI/ML to further study best practices for transforming complex data into actionable insights. I am a creative problem solver interested in applying machine learning and other cutting-edge computational techniques to solve interdisciplinary problems and explore data. I have 2 years of research experience developing software to study microbial genomics, with a special focus on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). Notably, I have developed scalable workflows for large datasets in high-performance computing environments, applied unsupervised machine learning algorithms and deep learning embedding approaches to genomic data, and designed and implemented visualization software for exploratory data analysis. I have also undertaken an honors thesis project where I designed a machine learning-based methodology for formulating gene order-based embeddings in the spirit of word embeddings to identify candidate antimicrobial resistance genes. My background has fostered my ability to think critically and innovatively, as well as given me hands-on experience with ML libraries including Scikit-Learn, TensorFlow, and PyTorch. In addition to my technical experience, I also have significant leadership experience through my role as a communications and outreach assistant for a local government official, as well as through my volunteer work with various health and education-focused non-profits. I am always interested in opportunities to apply my skills to new projects. I am currently exploring 2025 new grad roles within the US. Please feel free to connect with me through my LinkedIn profile or by reaching out to jtl2189@columbia.edu!
