Hunger for Justice is a storytelling series designed to center justice in food system dialogues. The series is an opportunity to shift our focus away from symptoms, like hunger, and towards the injustices at the root of our failing food system.

As the Director of Development at L.A. Compost, I played a crucial role in advancing compost infrastructure and access through regenerative practices and community empowerment. In the initial two years of operation, we significantly increased the capacity of publicly accessed compost hubs, successfully processing over 1 million lbs of compostable material annually. This achievement resulted in a substantial emission reduction equivalent to removing 90 cars off the road each year. We spearheaded the launch of Los Angeles's pilot Farmer’s Market Food Scrap Collection Program leading to the milestone of having all markets host collection programs by 2025. We collaborated with the Department of Public Works and Los Angeles Sanitation to drive policy initiatives for food recovery and composting infrastructure, securing grant funding, government contracts, recurring donations, and service revenue to advance the organization's impact and sustainability efforts.

At Local Roots, I played a pivotal role in advancing indoor farming solutions to meet the increasing demand for sustainable food production. As part of the team deploying over 100 TerraFarms in 2018, we transformed shipping containers into innovative indoor farms, utilizing LED lights and nutrient-rich water solutions for year-round, urban crop cultivation. Our sustainable practices reduced water consumption by 99%, with farmers monitoring and controlling container parameters through embedded sensors and an intuitive app. Notable clients included SpaceX, Tender Greens, and Mendocino Farms.
