Our goals are to provide programs that strengthen women in our community. In 2014 we are "Recycling Space" at the YWCA Elgin and need your help by voting for our project at http://bit.ly/YWCAPool. Here is a summary of the project. "Recycling Space Project" - Elgin, ILA sea of color, swimming in an abundance of satin and tulle... While it looks inviting, at second glance, one notices that something is amiss with this pool. We have a swimming pool full of prom dresses and what we need is usable classroom space! Located along the Fox River in Kane County, Illinois, the YWCA Elgin has been incorporated as a non-profit community organization for more than 112 years. The YWCA Elgin was built in 1965 as a full-service educational and athletic facility and effectively served girls, women and families in the greater Elgin community for nearly three generations. The demand for YWCA services has shifted away from athletics toward child care, preschool, after school care and a wide variety of Adult Educational services. Due to changes in state and federal regulations, and increased competition, our indoor pool was drained. We re-purposed the large vacuous space as a storage unit for a program that serves under-resourced teens with low- cost recycled prom dresses. As successfully as we adapted to this change, we were still left with many challenges surrounding this space. Given its large size, compounded with its under-utilization the aquatics area is draining the YWCA Elgin financially. The project consists of filling-in and decking an indoor pool; removing portions of a locker room to create classrooms; updating electrical and mechanical systems.
