I love helping people especially when the situation is tough! And that is what made me want to be a benefit advocate for a health insurance company. I have tried a few different career paths such as other office positions, casinos or warehouses. Luckily I know some people who worked at UHC and provided me with information about the positions. I wanted to then give it a try! Part of my responsibility is helping members with their health issues which can be really tough for them. I have the opportunity to assist them with the type of coverage they will have, provide patient responsibility information from the claims, help find other resources in their area for financial relief or even find programs like being able to speak with a nurse. Since starting this career choice I have had the privilege of not just assisting the members but my co workers as well. Helping my co workers is also helping the members! I was first able to help my co workers by working an ‘assistance line’. This was a way of communicating with co workers and if they had any questions regarding the members issue they can contact someone like myself to get help. From there I have been able to train other agents and have had the opportunity to allow them to shadow me. I am also currently working on being a ‘coach’ which is a more formal way of helping my co workers! Working hard and always trying to find ways to help our members and my co workers allowed me to be a ‘service hero finalist’. This is an award UHC gives to its workers who were nominated for various reasons. I may have not been an actual service hero this year but it was privilege being a finalist in this huge company. And I’ll try even harder next year to be a service hero! I have always been a team player and loved helping people which I think comes from the volunteer work and sports I participated in throughout my life. I just want the members to have a great experience!
