My childhood years were spent on a remote high country sheep and cattle station in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. Following my education at boarding school in Dunedin and Otago University I worked for the Ministry of Agriculture’s Invermay Research Centre under George Davis. George was researching the Booroola gene which involved on farm research and thousands of laparoscopies each year to determine ovulation rates.After two years at Invermay my travels took me to Canada, where I did a two year Masters degree in Animal Science. Once completed I returned to New Zealand, then started a career in artificial insemination (AI) and embryo transfer (MOET) in sheep and goats.While working for MAFTechnology’s Animal Business Group in 1990 – 1992, one of my roles was to support sheep breeders with their performance recording and sire referencing. This stimulated a strong interest in the genetic improvement of sheep flocks not only through artificial breeding, but also though accurate identification of animals with the most productive and therefore most profitable genes. In 2001, Genetic Gains had the opportunity to take over the local Invercargill Sheep Improvement Ltd. (SIL) Bureau. This allowed Genetic Gains to offer a complete genetics package to sheep breeders including the identification of elite animals through the SIL Bureau, the distribution and use of these genes through the Woodlands AB Centre and the provision of AI and MOET services. In 2020 the AB Centre was relocated from Woodlands, Southland to the Alexandra area in Otago and is now known as the Earnscleugh AB Centre.Genetic Gains Ltd. continues to offer sheep, deer and goat recording services through Beef + Lamb Genetic's Sheep Improvement Limited (SIL) and DEER Select bureaus, which allow breeders to identify their genetically superior animals after all environmental influences on their production have been removed. We provide ram semen collection, processing, storage, marketing, import and export services through our Artificial Breeding Centre, and are renown for our quality Intrauterine Artificial Insemination (AI) and Embryo Transfer Services.
