I worked in collaboration with a faculty member and PhD student to create a new reference service at the iSchool that is geared towards University of Pittsburgh MLIS students. In addition to providing references services both in-person and online via email, Skype chat, and embedding in Courseweb class discussion boards, I was involved in a number of other projects including the following: creating instructional videos for using library databases and other tools using Jing, promoting the service to students, and creating and modifying LibGuides for Library and Information Sciences courses.

My primary duties for this internship were to provide reference and library instruction services to students in the field of art and art history, as well as other visitors to the library. Working with the Fine Arts Bibliographer, I assisted with collection development, weeding and sending items to storage, and teaching library instruction sessions to students enrolled in Art History courses.I also collaborated with another intern to organize the library’s collection of artists’ books, which culminated in the development and online publishing of a LibGuide describing artists’ books and the library’s collection of them.

I traveled to Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia courthouses as needed to search for and obtain copies of oil and gas documents, frequently adding lease information to excel spreadsheets. I also scanned documents to create digital copies which I then stored in company files and Dropboxes for easy retrieval.

I instructed library patrons on using the library website and databases in fine arts field and provided reference services to students, faculty, and the general public. I also performed the following tasks:• Managed department when full time staff were not present• Updated MARC record notes for art history texts to promote increased discovery by users• Assisted Fine Arts Librarian and staff with organizing and setting up new exhibits, and processing gifts to the library

I prepared and presented lectures to sections of fifteen to thirty undergraduate students enrolled in survey Art History courses under the direction of the lead course instructor and faculty member, culminating in the facilitation of in-class discussion. I also proctored, graded, and recorded student exams and short essays using Courseweb.
