Phd, Computer Science (Hci)
Funded by an EPSRC scholarship, my research looked at real world use of consumer technologies (aka digital companions) such as apps, wearables and websites for health and wellbeing, and the influence of contexts (macro, meso and micro) on their usefulness and usability. Studying digital support for self-management of stress in the macro-context of education, I created a taxonomy to guide strategic and conceptually informed technology choices, the principles of which should generalise to other conditions and contexts. I also created a guide to populating the taxonomy with rigourously assured digital companion candidates that could be adopted by professionals, specialities or patient groups with security and privacy at the core. Policy, healthcare and workplace well-being pathways are all seeking to harness digital health for improved LTC self-care and elective outcomes. Innovation needs to take place in collaboration within the whole ecosystem, taking human factors including contexts into account, to optimise validity, utility and trust.

Director
JM Eyecare was a specialised optometry practice for people who were housebound, suffering severe mental illness or with learning disabilities. I set it up to demonstrate and deliver a new standard of care for some of the most vulnerable in society, ensuring patient held records of findings and recommendations, and with consent shared with the MDT (GP, Consultant, Social Services, Charity Support Workers etc). Lambeth PCT supported my training in the University of Warwick Certificate in Diabetes Care to enable a sysemic assessment of patients with diabetes. Information on risk of falls, daily living tasks and visual requirements were all clearly stated so the whole MDT were able to meet patients' needs and fully understand visual requirements and limitations. I sat on the National Domiciliary Eyecare Commmittee, sharing good practice nationwide and for 6 years served as a Trustee of the Institute of Optometry. The practice was sold in 2009 to HealthCall Optical, now part of Specsavers.
Professional Executive Committee
My responsibilites included:Strategic planning and commissioning of primary and secondary care, public health and mental health servicesImproving health outcomes for Lambeth residentsClinical advisory role for public health and the wider community
Community Optometrist And Lecturer
I worked in community optometry firstly in Hertfordshire then in London, covering specialities such as behavioural optometry and therapuetic contact lens and post-op clinics at the Royal Free Hospital. I taught as a visiting lecturer at City University before moving to work in south-east London. Increasingly involved in eyecare of the elderly, those with reduced vision and diabetes, I chaired the Local Optical Commitee and ran the LSL Low Vision Committee.
