Vacuum engineer in the Beam Vacuum Operation section where I validated different bake out procedures for vacuum sectors of the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Bake out refers to the process of heating vacuum pipes while pumping down the system so more gas and contaminants are removed. In the straight sections of the LHC the vacuum system is internally coated with a non-evaporable getter (NEG). The NEG is activated thermally and passively pump particles from the system when it has cooled down. The bake out procedure for the LHC need to remove gas and contaminants while not saturating the coating of activated NEG and with minimum radiation exposure. New procedures were needed to give more options to personnel commissioning vacuum systems in the LHC and make it easier to limit the radiation exposure time.Main tasks:- Laboratory testing and verification of bake out procedure validated for use in LHC sectors to reach ultra-high vacuum (UHV) regime, 1⋅10-7 to 1⋅10-12 mbar.- Cross-reference laboratory results with Monte Carlo simulations of 3D-models of vacuum systems with the software Molflow+.- Defined outgassing limitation of vacuum system components to be installed in the UHV transfer lines to the anti-matter experiments from the Extra -Low Energy Anti-matter (ELENA) ring.- Vacuum system commissioning with pump-down, leak detection and NEG activation in the LHC.- Test different types of residual gas analyses (RGA) for validation of use during commissioning of vacuum sectors in the LHC.

During my time as a technical student at CERN I learned various skills in vacuum science technology ranging from experimental tests in laboratory, vacuum simulations, in-situ interventions in the accelerators and to collaborate in a multi-national research environment. My work was summarized in my 60 ECTS master thesis: Vacuum simulation of Non-Evaporable Getter (NEG) coated components for distributed pumping in the Extra-Low Energy Anti-matter decelerator (ELENA)Main tasks:- Test components for UHV validation before installation in ELENA, including thermal activation of NEG coating, RGA analysis, leak detection and outgassing estimation. The results was presented in a technical report for each component.- Build a 3D-model of the ELENA ring and simulate the estimated pressure based on the experimental results, using Molflow+.- Present my work and results internally in the Vacuum, surfaces and coating group at CERN.- Vacuum interventions during technical stops in the LHC.
