Executive Vice Provost For Strategic Initiatives
As Executive Vice Provost, I led the design and implementation of the academic vision and university-wide pedagogy overhaul. I co-led the founding of several trans-disciplinary research centers, including for environmental science, data science, and preventative conservation and sustainability. I collaborated with the provost on creating policies related to faculty development, promotion, and salary structures and defined initial strategies and priorities for the Center of Teaching and Learning. During my tenure, the faculty was increased by 330%, and the student population by 280%. This was accomplished by executing a future-forward vision with diverse growth capabilities for both online and in-person engagement. UTEC is now ranked in first place per capita for scientific production in Peru โ competition included established universities within the region.This role was concurrent with, but separate from the Harvard appointment overlapping many of the same years.

In this role, I pioneered 40+ successful (inter)national proposals for scientific research and experimental programs over 21 different facilities encompassing satellites, telescopes and synchrotron facilities. I led multiple diverse research teams with senior members, including deans, national laboratory directors, and professors across the U.S., Europe, and Asia. I provided research mentorship and thesis advising for undergraduates, graduate students, and postdoctoral scholars. I also taught both undergraduate and graduate courses. Major achievement includes: โ Challenging senior scientific reservations to pioneer research into a newly established subfield of astrophysics, collaborating with talented specialists intersecting physics, chemistry, geology, and computer science. This new technique is now a focus of new X-ray satellite missions for the U.S., Europe, and Japan.โ Notable Shared Prizes: 2015 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics; 2007 Gruber Cosmology Prize I served on the following committees and advisories:โ U.S. (AAS) High Energy Astrophysics: Executive Committee to represent science interests to government.โ Science Advisory and Review Committees: National Science Foundation, NASA, and European Space Agency for research and new space missions.โ University & department committees, including as chair.
