About Julia Montgomery

Public policy and planning nerd with a drive to make our communities more equitable, safe, sustainable, healthy, and fun. I love to connect and help develop people, ideas, and resources to make the world a better place.Put my brain to work, and you get:• An engineer to analyze systems, conduct research, identify needs and opportunities, and develop tailored recommendations. • A communicator to generate high-value discussions, presentations, writing, maps, and graphics targeted to a variety of audiences.• A facilitator to collaborate with stakeholders and teammates to develop ideas, build consensus, catalyze action, and achieve goals. In my 10+ years in public policy and planning, I've been heavily engaged at the local (Austin), regional (Capital Area), and state (Texas) levels.I'm currently working on regional transportation planning, housing, and economic development issues at the Capital Area COG, which was preceded by a gig doing GIS mapping for the City of Austin's Transportation Department. Previously, I worked at The Texas Tribune, producing large public events statewide, and at UT Austin's LBJ School, managing communications and events for a policy research center. Before that, my work focused on policy research and analysis, with positions at the Texas House, Dallas ISD, and CPPP. Before public policy, I worked in engineering, with stints at NASA and IBM.Outside of work, I helped found AURA, a grassroots urbanist organization that advocates for an Austin for everyone. In 2013-14, I represented AURA on Mayor Leffingwell's Project Connect Central Corridor Advisory Group and have spoken to Austin City Council, boards/commissions, civic groups, and the media on transportation, housing, land use, and governance issues. I remain civically active on these issues and more.Alum of the University of Texas at Austin's LBJ School of Public Affairs (MPAff 2009), Department of Government (BA 2006), and Cockrell School of Engineering (BS 2005).
