About Julian Leon

With more than a decade of experience working with wildlife, I've engaged in a diversity of research, educational, and field opportunities during my time at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and beyond. In the laboratory, I honed my dissection skills and conducted dissections/necropsies on multiple phyla across the animal kingdom. I also routinely extracted DNA and RNA from field-collected specimens, sorted sediment samples using microscopes, took water-quality samples, and used oceanographic measuring instruments. My proficiency in the field is equally noteworthy, having gained extensive experience in both terrestrial and aquatic surveys, and possessing a range of qualifications including PADI divemaster, scientific diver, freediver, kayaker, and boat pilot. My skills as a public speaker and knowledge of marine biology have also enabled me to work as an outdoor educator and social media content creator, utilizing my acting, artistic creativity, and sense of humor to communicate complex topics related to marine science and wildlife to diverse audiences. My ultimate objective is to continue developing my field skills and utilizing them for marine biology research and conservation. In addition, I aspire to bridge the gap between the scientific community and the public by using fun and engaging ways to educate people about the wonders of marine science.
