About Julian Philips

Julian Philips is a composer and teacher whose distinctive and individual work takes in opera, dance, song, chamber, choral and orchestral music. His large-scale works have been staged by Glyndebourne Festival Opera, the Royal Opera House and English National Ballet; his songs championed by artists such as Gerald Finley, James Gilchrist and Susan Bickley, and chamber works featured at Wigmore Hall and at the Berlin Philharmonic's Chamber Music Hall.Julian heads up a dynamic composition department at the Guildhall School working with a lively and diverse team of staff composers. Over the past 13 years, Julian has taught and supervised a host of young composers including Bushra El Turk, Oliver Leith, Philip Venables and Na'ama Zisser. In addition to his Head of Department role, Julian is also Head of New Opera Development, through which he has established a key strategic partnership with the Royal Opera House, setting up an MA in Opera-Making & Writing, and a doctoral composer-in-residence scheme which has nurtured and incubated Philip Venables' '4.48 Psychosis' and Na'ama Zisser's 'Mamzer'. A new Guildhall/ROH opera by Matt Rogers receives its premiere in summer 2020.For the past 15 years, Julian Philips has run an innovative adult education project for the Wigmore Hall, the 'Wigmore Study Group', an audience development scheme which offers participants an in-depth engagement with key chamber music composers and works, collaborating both with young musicians from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama, and with pianist Laura Roberts.Julian Philips' Chaucer opera 'The Tale of Januarie', with a libretto by Stephen Plaice, was premiered by the Guildhall School's acclaimed Opera Department in Spring 2017. He has just completed a choral work 'The Promised Child' for InterOpera, and is currently working on a new Oboe Quintet for the Wigmore Hall, a viola concerto for violist Virginia Slater, and a music theatre work based on the 'peasant poet' John Clare.
