About Julian De Hoog

Research scientist and entrepreneur with more than 14 years of research experience across a broad range of disciplines (renewable energy forecasting, energy storage, electrified transport, carbon emissions), using a diverse set of tools (AI, machine learning, optimisation, forecasting, time series analysis). Currently CEO and Co-founder of Solstice AI, a startup applying AI to satellite imagery to identify solar panels and forecast solar power. Also currently an Honorary Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, supervising graduate student research and contributing to energy-related research projects.Previously was a Senior Research Scientist at IBM Research Australia, working on reducing the carbon footprint of IBM's data centers, and optimally operating energy storage. Before that, spent three years as a Research Fellow at the University of Melbourne, working together with several utility partners to study the impacts of electric vehicles on distribution networks, and to develop smart charging algorithms for optimal load shifting.

  • The University Of Melbourne
    Honorary Research Fellow
The University Of Melbourne Nov 2014 - Present
    Melbourne, Victoria, Au
I am a member of the Optimisation and Pattern Recognition Group in the School of Engineering, and work closely with the Department of Electrical Engineering. I continue to co-supervise several PhD and Masters graduate students and publish joint research.
  • The University Of Melbourne
    Research Fellow
The University Of Melbourne Feb 2012 - Nov 2014
    Melbourne, Victoria, Au
As a member of a research project examining "The Impact of the Mass Adoption of Electric Cars on the Australian Electricity Grid", I was responsible for development of a suitable simulation framework, for determining at a high level of detail the potential impacts of electric vehicles on the grid, and for designing an optimal charging strategy that minimises negative impacts of electric vehicle charging.Several years on, these research outcomes continue to inform government bodies and contribute to policy decisions.

  • Ibm
    Senior Research Scientist
    Ibm Nov 2014 - May 2021
    Armonk, New York, Ny, Us
Conducted ground-breaking research in forecasting and optimisation algorithms across multiple energy-related domains. Led the Australian team as part of a global effort within IBM to quantify and reduce the carbon footprint of client workloads running on IBM data centers. Led a five-year effort within IBM to optimally operate energy storage systems, taking into account multiple value streams and impact of operation on battery degradation. Research effort involved collaboration with multiple academic and industry partners, including University of Melbourne, ANU, CSIRO, Selectronic, and Relectrify.
  • University Of Oxford
    Computer Science Phd
University Of Oxford Aug 2007 - Aug 2011
    Oxford, Oxfordshire, Gb
In my PhD I developed new methods for teams of robots to explore unknown environments for search-and-rescue purposes. This involved collaborative mapping, sensor fusion, multi-agent coordination, and task-based planning. The research outcomes were demonstrated on a team of real robots that were able to autonomously map the university campus at the University of Sevilla, as part of a joint research collaboration.
