I am a co-founder and CSO of SOLASTA Bio, a biotech start-up devoted to developing greener, more selective insect control agents.I grew up in Gloucestershire and took a scholarship to the University of Cambridge, graduating with a Double First in Natural Sciences (M.A., Ph.D., Sc.D.), followed by a Research Fellowship of St Catharine's College, and then a Harkness Fellowship in Philadelphia. Since 1984, I've lived and worked in Glasgow, where I was Professor of Molecular and Integrative Biology from 1999 to 2024. My research focusses on the functional genomics of the renal system and homeostasis across the Insects, leveraging the unique genetic power of Drosophila. Our lab is also very well-known for our public domain transcriptomic atlases, flyatlas.org and flyatlas2.org, and the recently-released flymet.org metabolomics database.I have also served in a senior capacity for a number of external roles, notably with the UK BBSRC, the German DFG, and the European Commission. I was a panellist in the UK REF2014, and a Deputy Chair in the REF2021, assessment exercises.
