A good designer is not limited to design within only certain materials and environments. A good designer uses all of these to their advantage forming the design around such material, environmental and economic limitations. Good design must be a fundamental melding of both function and form. A lapse in the former leads to a product that though pretty doesn't fulfil its purpose, and as a consequence serves no purpose. Neglect the latter and you create something that might work but is not a pleasure to use in its intended function. Form and function should complement each other and never be at the others expense.

Critical to being a good designer is the ability to look impartially at ones own creations and to recognise those elements that work, and more importantly those which do not, so that one can evolve the design and develop better products (Google "Honda's 'Failure: The Secret to Success", or read up on Edison)

.Innovation must be based upon a solid foundation of how things work, how systems work - how the world works. Taking this understanding and combining it with imagination, creativity - a mental library of things that you have found inspiring - and a desire to push the envelope and improve upon the status quo should be the fundamental desire of all good designers. It is this philosophy that drives me as a designer.
