The goal of the project is to design and implement a convolutional neural network in PyTorch to differentiate between the Cherenkov rings produced by weak interactions of muon and electron neutrinos and pair-producing gamma rays as detected by photomultiplier tubes at the Super and Hyper-K facilities. Labeled data to train the neural net is generated by a simulation of the Hyper-K facility hosted on a ComputeCanada computing cluster.
