As a graduate assistant for the DOR, I work in collaboration with Senior Vocational Rehabilitation Counselors to manage their caseloads of consumers with disabilities in need of vocational rehabilitation services. In this role I am gaining experience in working in mental health through counseling our consumers towards achieving their professional and personal goals. Through utilizing my current research experience in student development theories along with psychodynamic theory, I possess the gift of helping people re-create their lives and imagining the possibilities of their dreams by listening to their needs and working side by side to track their progress and human development.

Within the department of the Mustang Success Center at Cal Poly, Academic Coaches provide an inclusive and supportive environment to our NCAA D1 collegiate student athletes within their studies. Academic coaches serve both first-year and transfer athletes by meeting with each athlete bi-weekly at a consistent time to counsel them on their academic and athletic performance and goals, and then follow up by reporting students’ academic progress to coaches and fellow Academic Advisors. Academic coaches encourage independent thinking and challenge students’ thinking, while holding athletes accountable for their time management, organization skills, and overall performance throughout all areas of their lives. As an Academic Coach, we help students learn effective study skills, note taking skills, test preparation, time management, organization, goal planning, and setting weekly objectives through individualized mentoring and counseling.
