Being invited by a former colleague to join their team is a great compliment. My part-time contract responsibilities for NYAA included planning and executing media outreach activities to promote New York apples to wholesale and consumer customers, representing the association to consumer and trade media, and providing strategic communications counsel to NYAA's senior management.

With this move, I expanded from the apple industry to the produce industry at large. I directed public relations and crisis communications for the produce industry's largest global trade association. I led the PR team's support to in-house "clients" such as membership, events and government relations. This included developing and managing plans and budgets, overseeing contractors and pioneering into the then-new world of podcasts and social media. I also served as the association's spokesperson on a range of issues, including food safety and pesticide residues.

My promotional and issue/crisis communications experience came together in this position, where I directed public relations activities and provided crisis communications counsel for the U.S. apple industry's national trade association. I was the founding manager of the association's national program to research and promote the health benefits of apples and apple products to U.S. consumers. My responsibilities included developing annual business plans, directing staff and contractors, and serving as the organization's primary spokesperson. Notable results included generating press coverage reaching more than 250 million consumers and valued at approximately $8 million in four years; creating an award-winning holiday health marketing platform, "Apples for Santa"; and successfully defusing efforts by special interest groups to disparage the public image of apples in the media. Early in my career with USApple, I directed membership recruiting and retention.

This career move added crisis communications planning and training, and B2B marketing, to my PR skill set. We served Fortune 500 corporations and other clientele. In addition to client work, I also handled the firm's B2B marketing PR, including placing spokespersons in leading media such as The Wall Street Journal and Larry King Live.

I provided writing/editing, print and audiovisual production support services to this communications branch of the National Forest Products Association. We produced a broad range of communications vehicles, including issues public opinion campaigns, multiple weekly and monthly newsletters, annual reports, brochures, event collateral, slide shows and videos. I was assistant editor of the American Tree Farm magazine, which won a PRSA Silver Anvil.

I put my newly-received economics degree to work as an economic researcher for NFPA, which included researching and producing the association's economics newsletter to membership. I supported a range of association special projects. I quickly learned I preferred communications to number crunching, so I began moving my career in that direction starting with the American Forest Council.
