About Julia Stubbs

Thank you for reading.I am an experienced theatre director and producer and the Artistic Director of 20 South Street, a creative company that works in theatre with a focus on new writing. My theatre credits have included directing and producing critically acclaimed productions on the fringe and Off-West End in London and at international festivals in Edinburgh, Romania, and South Africa. I've nurtured new writers including Mari Lloyd, Laura Stevens, Louise Buchler, and Steven Hevey by directing their debut plays. I collaborated with Catalan theatre’s most celebrated writer Josep Maria Benet i Jornet, directing the UK premiere of his landmark play Desire. I have also directed several short films, and the latest I have produced and directed is To Womb It May Concern by emerging writer Georgia Lovell, which is currently on its festival circuit.I also work as a multimedia content creator at Grey Swan, defining and developing the vision and presence of arts organisations and small businesses. I utilise my background in theatre to work creatively with clients, bringing innovative thinking to individuals and companies and their ideas. Through social media, video content, website design, and promotion, I assist in making people, projects and companies stand out from the crowd. In addition, I have an accomplished technical and administrative skill set developed through my widespread experience gained over 20 years in support roles as an Executive PA, Team Coordinator, and Office Manager. In my most recent support role at Mercuri Urval Ltd from 2010 to 2018, I worked closely with one of the company's Vice Presidents as their Executive PA providing extensive diary management and personal admin support, whilst also supporting the Managing Director overseeing all aspects of the company's UK head office in London and its office in Manchester.

Whether you’re a young adult finding your place in the world, or of an older generation struggling to keep up with life’s many changes – this show works for all.” The Reviews Hub“Phillip John Jones and Emma Kaler’s performances are moving and true... Set designer Rachael Rooney has provided a raised square stage that evokes a boxing ring, and under Julia Stubbs’s direction, Rhys and Yasmin hang around waiting for their moment to come out of their corner to deliver or receive one of life’s punches.” British Theatre Guide“Mari Lloyd's new play covers a lot of ground and director Julia Stubbs draws splendid performances from Phillip John Jones and Emma Kaler as the two troubled teens.” Broadway World UK

    London
SPARKS by Simon Longman explores the reunion of two estranged sisters after 12 years apart. This revival which I've directed runs at the Jack Studio Theatre, London from 2-13 July 2024.★★★★"Sparks is full of dark humour... Despite having a complex whirlwind of witty dialogue that opens the show, Riches never stumbles and, indeed, commands the stage... Lisa Minichiello as Sarah plays the perfect foil to Riches’ eccentricities, conveying a believable feeling of abandonment that has built up over many years... Simon Longman and Julia Stubbs have done a masterful job of portraying women looking in on what makes an ‘ordinary’ life with ‘ordinary’ people and, not being able to achieve that, finding solace in each other."London Pub Theatres
  • And Tomorrow Theatre Company Ltd
Theatre Director Of What I Really Think Of My Husband: Thomas Hardy And His Wives By David Pinner
And Tomorrow Theatre Company Ltd Nov 2023 - Dec 2023
    London
WHAT I REALLY THINK OF MY HUSBAND is a new play by David Pinner exploring the later years of the writer Thomas Hardy and the women in his life. The premiere production which I've directed runs at the Golden Goose Theatre, London from 21 November to 2 December 2023.★★★★“With a talented cast that shines, and choreography that shimmers as time and place shift effortlessly, there is a fluidity of language and motion and ideas. Each actor brings their light to bear on this show and create an orchestral captivation. The simple, shifting set and haunting music work beautifully with these performers… The beauty of the comedic lines in this piece is that they are often spoken by the women in this play… David Pinner’s lyrical and literary piece does a valiant job at giving us an understanding of Hardy’s later life, with glimpses of his youth” London Pub Theatres

The play received its World Premiere in London in April 2016 in a production with Jeffrey Mundell and directed by Timothy Stubbs Hughes which I produced for 20 South Street."Julia Stubbs Hughes has deconstructed the play and reconstructed it using only Shakespeare’s text to look at the events from the perspective of the survivor... she has created an intriguing monologue for an actor and Jeffrey Mundell rises splendidly to the challenge, delivering the famous set pieces handsomely and keeping the attention of the audience throughout."
