At EFAP, an international school of communication in Paris, I teach the course "News Decryption and Analysis" to first and second-year students, providing a comprehensive understanding of the news industry and journalism’s pivotal role in society. The course explores core topics such as media ownership, objectivity, social media influence, journalism ethics, media law, and the various business models that shape today’s media landscape.Through this curriculum, students develop the skills to critically engage with the news, understanding the complex forces at play in media production and consumption. We examine current challenges facing the industry, including shifting news consumption patterns and their societal impact. Students also learn to analyse news with a discerning eye, factoring in journalistic values, editorial perspectives, and ownership influences to better understand what shapes the stories they read.By the end of the course, students are equipped with key concepts in journalism and media studies, empowering them to navigate and interpret the rapidly evolving world of news with a critical and informed perspective.
