Julide Etem is a media scholar and producer who has an international work history in Turkey, Italy, and the United States.Her research focuses on how institutions produce educational media with the intention of generating transformative social impact. Some of her articles were published in Global Perspectives, Alphaville: Journal of Film and Screen Media, In Media Res, Review of Middle East Studies, and Rivista Luci e Ombre. She also presented at conferences such as Society For Cinema and Media Studies (SCMS), Visible Evidence, Middle East Studies Association (MESA), and the International Communication Association (ICA). She is the Early Career Representative of the Communication History division at the ICA.As a producer, Julide created short documentaries, digital archives, and multimedia platforms to document stories of marginalized communities. She filmed protests against authoritarian government leaders, anti-Islamophobia movements, human rights violations of refugees, and advocated for disability and abortion rights as well as immigration reform. Her short documentaries were screened at film festivals (such as the Virginia Film Festival) and received the attention of media and government agencies (including Inside Higher Ed, The Department of Homeland Security, New York City Mayor Bloomberg’s Office for Policy & Strategic Planning, and New American Economy).Additionally, she worked for the Black Film Center & Archive, the City Lights Film Series and the In Light Human Rights Documentary Film Festival.She has an extensive teaching experience and taught courses on media arts, film history, design & production, race & ethnicity, and national & international cinema at Indiana University, University of Virginia, Clark University and Emerson College. She also guest lectured at Boston College, University of Georgia, Bentley University, and Virginia Commonwealth University.
