I combine writing about environmental and education issues with time for running, hiking and photography. As a blogger for Friends of the Smokies (a non-profit organization that raises funds for projects in Great Smoky Mountains National Park), I've worked on more than 200 posts. I've had the opportunity to tell the stories of Artists-in-Residence, education programs, the African American Experience in the Smokies, Plein Air Smokies, trail restoration, and search and rescue. I am honored to serve on the University of Florida's Graduate Student Teaching Awards Committee, continuing my commitment to promoting excellence in teaching at UF. During my 28 years on faculty at UF, I taught more than 11,000 undergraduates, supervised graduate student teachers and was a speaker at UF's orientation for new teaching assistants. A special project for me was serving as an editor for "Celebrating 75 Years: Excellence in Education/Oak Ridge Schools, 1944-2018." The school system was created as part of the war effort during WWII, and my father was the first principal hired.
