I fell in love with cataloging and metadata while working at the Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum, as an undergraduate student at Ohio State University. I was tasked with checking and providing minor edits to the records for the oversized comic books. This introduced me to the world of bibliographic records and resource description, where I was fascinated by the various MARC fields and formatted metadata. From that moment on I knew that I wanted to make and edit these records as a career. It wasn't long before I was in the graduate school program at Kent State University, pursuing a variety of part time jobs in their campus libraries. One position in particular truly set me up for a career in cataloging and metadata: cataloging graduate student assistant. Here I learned the meanings of MARC fields, how to read and create RDA and AACR2 records, Library of Congress call numbers and subject headings, National Library of Medicine call numbers and subject headings, cataloging resources in non-English languages, the various types of records for different material formats, creating and editing Name Authority Records for personal names, and so much more. This job made me eager to wake up in the morning, and I am beyond grateful for all the people I worked with in technical services and at Kent State. My dream is to continue my work and education as a cataloger and metadata librarian. I'm happy to say that I currently work at University of Maryland, Baltimore County, where I can continue to grow as a professional. Other than that, I am a member of ALA and NOTSL (Northeastern Ohio Technical Services Librarians). Not to mention, I recently attended the ALA 2024 Conference in San Diego, CA, where I learned a lot from their sessions and met some great people in the field.
