I had a great and diverse career in journalism, with a short detour into politics and public relations. Here were some of the highlights ...Travel: My favorite specialty over the years. I wound up my career as an editor on contract with Rick Steves' Europe. Other credits include The Culture Trip, Sunset, Lonely Planet, United Airlines' Hemispheres, Moon Handbooks, and many more. My guidebooks included Idaho Off the Beaten Path (10th ed. 2022), Traveling the Lewis & Clark Trail, and Traveling the Oregon Trail. I may do some bite-size guidebook research projects in the future.Business: I enjoyed writing (for editorial and sponsored content situations alike) about how small retail and service businesses are surviving and thriving amid disruption and competition. I was the first editor-in-chief of INVISION, SmartWork Media’s magazine for independent optical professionals that won a best issue "Eddie" from Folio in our first full year.Creative aging: I was a 2021-2022 Journalists in Aging Fellow, and I wrote regularly for 3rd Act Magazine, a quarterly magazine with the motto "Aging With Confidence." I'm especially interested in how active engagement with the arts can improve life for older people; that was the focus of my JIA fellowship.Essayist: From March 2020 through March 21, I wrote a series of 52 weekly Pandemic Postcards at my blog, Surely Joy. I also worked as a newspaper reporter and editor, PR person, and social media pioneer. I am dedicated to lifelong learning; right before the pandemic, I went to Guadalajara to earn a certification in Teaching English as a Foreign Language, and I have volunteered as an online English class assistant with Literacy Source to serve my neighbors in Seattle. In retirement, I plan to continue as a seasonal seating host with the Seattle Mariners where I've worked since 2016. It's the perfect part-time job for a lifelong baseball fan and people person. Here are some favorite quotations that capture my approach to work and life:Don't talk about it. Be about it. - Mos DefThere are a thousand thousand reasons to live this life, every one of them sufficient. - Marilynne Robinson, "Gilead"Find the good and praise it. - Alex Haley If you have a chance to accomplish something that will make things better for people coming behind you, and you don't do that, you are wasting your time on this earth. - Roberto ClementeFind your voice and help others find theirs. - Stephen Covey

Copy EditorSan Francisco Chronicle Feb 2013 - Nov 2013San Francisco Bay AreaIt was fun to be back in the newsroom after 20 years, working at one of America's great metropolitan papers during an exciting year of news, and dividing my time between the news desk and sports desk. I left to accept a job that allowed me to telecommute. -

I worked with IPL to help raise the organization's profile and strengthen its state affiliates' communications skills. -
Communications DirectorIdaho Education Association May 2010 - Apr 2012I worked for Idaho's teachers and other education professionals during one of the most tumultuous times in the IEA's history, when the state was making national news for its education reform efforts. In addition to assisting state and national reporters with their coverage of these events, I edited a quarterly print publication and was able to introduce many innovations during my two years on the job, including new branding (for which I won the State Education Editors' One-Person-Shop Crown Jewel Award) and an extensive and effective social media presence that helped lay the groundwork for voters to overturn several education reform bills in 2012.
