HMS MEDscience www.hmsmedscience.org mission is to increase inner city students’ interest, achievement and career intentions in the health care fields by engaging them in hands-on, field-based experiences coupled with an intensive program of instruction. MEDscience aims to inspire our students to want to enter health care and other STEM professions while providing them with the theoretical and practical scientific knowledge they need to be successful in these fields. In building this STEM pipeline, we create individual opportunities while growing jobs in the economy. MEDscience increases interest and motivation by introducing students to compelling role models, immersing them in real-life simulation exercises in an actual hospital setting where they are trained in specific medical skills, critical thinking and problem-solving while simultaneously building teamwork and communication skills and developing personal health literacy.We work in collaboration with HMS, Longwood area hospitals, the Boston Public Schools (BPS) and several area public and private school systems. Our curriculum trains students in critical thinking and problem solving while also developing their skills in teamwork, communication, and personal health literacy. Our evidence-based program documents significant gains, in not only engaging and inspiring students in pursuing health care career pathways, but also in strengthening students’ social/emotional skills.MEDscience was created to address the achievement, opportunity, and inspiration gap prevalent in the Boston Public Schools. The program provides a new way to teach the biology of the human body to high school students, getting them out of the traditional (often didactic) classroom and into an inspiring environment for hands-on medical simulations. The MEDscience approach to learning is based on the observation that some of the most powerful learning happens in the real world. Students at MEDscience are immersed and engaged in science while developing skills essential for careers in STEM- critical thinking, problem solving, and teamwork. Students that work through problem-based scenarios are not only more likely to remember the content but are also more likely to be able to apply that knowledge in the future. After completing MEDscience, our diverse student population consistently demonstrates an above average understanding of biology concepts and an overall satisfaction (4.6 on a 5-point scale) in the teaching pedagogy.
