Benjamin Franklin said, "Either write something worth reading or do something worth writing." My professional career has consisted of teaching others to express themselves clearly in written form or to at least appreciate the art forms of composition and literature. My career began as a journalist and reporter for the Atlanta Journal and Constitution, but I soon discovered a desire to teach. Since that time, I have worked as a writing instructor: I earned a master's degree in English Education with certification for teaching gifted students. I began as a high school English and journalism educator and then after earning a doctorate in Education, progressed to instructing first and second-year college English courses as well as a graduate writing course for educators.I recently found myself in a position to also "do something worth writing" as an education missionary and college instructor for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Brigham Young University-Hawaii. I shifted gears again to combine both my communications and English backgrounds to instruct Business Communications and Media Writing for Brigham Young University - Hawaii. The journalist side of me is not only enjoying investigating the Polynesian lifestyle but also how the cultures from more than 70 countries in the Pacific Rim region coexist at this campus. My interaction with these international students helped me understand how to navigate the sometimes precarious waters of cultural differences.Now, I teach writing and communications online to students across the nation, enjoy conducting research, and love creating student-engaging curricula.
