About Julie M. Mccarthy

I've worn many hats as a seasoned international correspondent, editor, and broadcast leader in a journey that has taken me around the world. I've been fortunate to circumnavigate the globe, reporting from five continents, covering everything from daily life to armed conflicts to sports and show business. I thrive in diverse and dynamic environments and like to think I bring a sense of empathy and energy to the many challenges operating in far-flung places presents. A sense of humor has probably served me better than any degrees I’ve earned. My expertise lies in crafting in-depth social, political, and cultural narratives for broadcast and digital media. I am most drawn to issues of geopolitics and social justice. I'm an independent thinker, equally comfortable in bustling newsrooms and academic settings as well as the private sector. I love a good mystery, and the more layered the story the better. I’ve earned a reputation as an authoritative voice that can make the complex understandable, digestible, and hopefully entertaining.

  • Npr
Southeast Asia Correspondent, Manila Bureau Chief
    Npr 2018 - 2023
    Manila, National Capital Region, Philippines
Reported, wrote, and produced daily deadline news and award-winning in-depth features for NPR's news magazine shows and digital media, covering major issues on China's growing influence in the region. I extensively reported on growing tensions over Taiwan, the crushing of Hong Kong's pro-democracy movement, and rising tensions in the South China Sea where regional claimants faced off with Beijing whose vast claims to the disputed waters is deepening antagonism between the U-S and China. I closely covered the election and administration of Ferdinand Marcos Jr. I followed his predecessor Rodrigo Duterte's brutal anti-drug war, the social cleavages it caused, and the efforts at the International Criminal Court to bring those responsible for the anti-drug war to justice. Widely traveled the "Pacific Ring of Fire" covering natural disasters from volcanos to earthquakes to climate-change driven typhoons. Examined asymmetric conflicts plaguing the Philippines and investigated a 75-year old war crime featuring Philippine women who had been sexually enslaved by Japan's Imperial Army during WWII. Their compelling story on-air and on-line won the Edward R. Murrow Award and was among NPR's most downloaded stories of 2020-2021.
  • Npr
    Foreign Correspondent
    Npr 1994 - 2023
I have circumnavigated the globe to capture stories about how the world lives, eats, weds, votes, gets educated, goes to war, and mourns its dead. U-S foreign policy issues and regional conflicts were often the focus of my extensive experience as an international correspondent. The global status of women, their progress and challenges, were persistent themes along with questions of what constitutes justice for both men and women in the world today.

Led the New Delhi team, delivering impactful coverage of India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan. Collaborated with NPR's news magazine shows, digital and social media to produce stories across all platforms. Closely covered the rise of Narendra Modi and his landslide election in 2014. Extensively reported on caste, climate change, health effects of some of the world's worst pollution, the conflict in Kashmir, and rising border tensions between India and China as well as India and Pakistan, most often on tight deadlines. Covered earthquakes and avalanche-related disasters in Nepal that decimated its sherpa community and raised questions about expeditions undertaken by the unexperienced, wealthy climbers. Sexual violence against women in India was a recurring theme of my coverage as the issue of sexual abuse became a source of national debate. Developed staff, negotiated cost-savings leases, navigated India's massive bureaucracy, and managed bureau finances.
