As a Canine Care Technician at Southeastern Guide Dogs, my chief concern and greatest joy is making sure that the dogs in our kennel have all that they need physically, emotionally, and are free from mental suffering. I love taking dogs out for enrichment: forming playgroups, grooming, food enrichment, as well as olfactory, visual and auditory enrichment. In many ways I am an advocate for the dogs at the kennel while they are training and waiting to be paired with their new handler. One of the most rewarding aspects of the job is teaching the volunteers, new hires and the public about canine behavior, enrichment, handling, and care. I feel like I come alive when I’m teaching others how to work with the dogs and help make their time with us as stress free as possible.A little over a year ago I moved from Tallahassee where I was a positive reinforcement dog trainer for The Puppy Ladies for 13 months. I absolutely loved working with and assessing all the dogs with their different temperaments and interacting with their owners. I taught group classes, offered private training in the owner's home, and held behavior consultations for dogs with varying behavioral challenges. The greatest reward was seeing the joy on both the dog and owner’s face when I was able to help a dog learn a particular behavior making their lives together more fulfilling. In my spare time, I still travel to peoples’ homes to offer training and behavioral consultations.I am also very creative and enjoy working with a team to promote a mission that I believe in. I was the liaison for the mission group I worked with for 10 years. I loved using my passion and creativity to awaken passion in other people. When I truly believe in something I give 100 percent of myself to it. I am acutely observant and easily take the initiative to self start and require minimal supervision.
