About Julie Smith

I have been working in the Data & Business Intelligence field for over 20 years. My roles have exhibited my enthusiasm, versatility and ability to communicate effectively with customers and colleagues at all levels.I am highly adaptable, fulfilling roles including head of department, manager, senior consultant, pre-sales and in education to deliver a range of courses at both business and technical levels. I am comfortable working in changing environments having experienced the rapid expansion of a start-up, merger of large corporations and company takeovers. I quickly adapted to the covid-enforced working from home regime having worked in globally spread teams in the past.I have built & led teams in Data Governance, Data Engineering and BI Delivery plus worked as a lead consultant on BI projects, across multiple business sectors. My in-depth knowledge of techniques and ability to share this knowledge in an engaging manner has led to my being used as 'guru' on projects and advising on solution design. My strong sense of empathy and desire to listen allows me to relate quickly to business scenarios and translate them into technical requirements, making me popular with customers and colleagues alike. They have experienced my strength to quickly think around and beyond the challenges faced, so providing timely, comprehensive and integrated solutions for the long term.I have authored a number of education courses that draw upon my real experiences of the implementation of BI solutions. These courses include Dimensional Modelling, Data Quality, Advanced Universe Design and Reporting workshops. Each course exhibits best practice and maintains a pragmatic approach to problems faced in a BI environment. I have also composed a number of bespoke courses for customers wishing to completely integrate their business processes with the use of their own BI or other toolset.In all aspects of my work I enjoy seeing the positive impact that my actions have on colleagues and customers alike. Be this in the use of a new dashboard, the understanding gained from an effective piece of training or simply seeing the motivation of my teams to make their own impact.

    As Head of Data & BI I grew the BI team into a 20 strong department including Data Governance, Data Engineering and BI Delivery to support the transformation to being data driven.Through the definition of data principles and underlying strategy, my teams and I established a data organisation, flexible data infrastructure and fresh perspective on data delivery through visualisation rather than information overload. All of this grounded in a firm understanding of the challenges faced during rapid growth.Data Governance introduced a Data Catalog solution (Alation) to democratise and demystify data to the masses, empowering them to act on information. Rapid growth can dilute knowledge but this is being addressed by providing a single point of reference for systems, their data and its interaction. Data quality is key and we work with the business to identify issues, find root cause, fix and prevent reoccurrence. Underpinning this has to be an awareness of the importance, and at times fragility, of data. To support this we are designing training to ensure colleagues understand their role in the production and continued health of our data.Data Engineering have produced resilient and reusable components for quick transportation, transformation and integration of data into formats ready to exploit. Based upon AWS architecture, a Data Lake, Data Warehouse plus marts is being built to service needs from our systems, business intelligence and data science. All of this performed in close partnership with the wider technology teams.BI Delivery continue to evolve the presentation of data. With the use of SAP BI for 'traditional' report requirements and Tableau for dashboards & analytics, the business is being invited to interact with the data rather than wade through it.My teams are well respected and while split into their respective functional areas they come together to work in an extremely collaborative manner to deliver the best value to the business.

    I joined Greensill initially to head up a small BI team of just three and enhance the methods being employed for the production of business intelligence for the company. During this period, alongside continuous delivery of both operational and BI reporting, I was responsible for the design and delivery of a Data Warehouse solution in collaboration with an external consultancy. This project was delivered on time and under budget with immediate positive impact upon the reporting capabilities within the company.I expanded the team and together we worked to streamline the reporting solutions being used within Greensill. I encouraged the team to work closely with the business in order to fully appreciate their challenges and thus identify more rounded solutions that would serve the future as well as the immediate ask. We also used this relevant knowledge to help influence the design of our in-house applications so that wider data use cases could be supported in a robust manner.
